Redcliffe By-election 2005 : Home
The Redcliffe by-election was held on Saturday, 20th August, 2005. Our coverage was minimal, but the wins by the Liberal Party in both Redcliffe and Chatsworth with swings of around 14% could signal a paradigm shift in Queensland politics.
The Liberal Party last held Redcliffe in 1989 when then state leader Terry White was the member. He lost to Ray Hollis in a campaign which was strongly affected by the Fitzgerald Committee of Inquiry into corruption in the Bjelke-Petersen government.
The Liberal Party came close to winning this seat in 1995 with Judy Beresford as their candidate, but she lost because an independent candidate directed preferences away from her. The independent had previously sought Liberal Party preselection.
