About Maryborough

Maryborough was created in 1864 and is based on the south east Queensland city of the same name. It extends from Burrum Heads in the north, south through Howard and Tiaro to Curra.

Seat Background

From 1971 until 1998 Maryborough was held by all three major parties. In 1998 Dr John Kingston won the seat for One Nation. Less than a year later he quit One Nation and was re-elected in 2001 as an independent though his margin over the ALP was cut to a mere 200 votes. In 2003 Kingston resigned on the grounds of ill health causing this by-election.
