About Wakefield
The South australian seat of Wakefield covers an area of 6,155 sq km and includes the northern Adelaide suburbs of Elizabeth, Munno Para, Gawler, and the Clare and Gilbert valleys. It is a mixed electorate of urban and rural areas.
Seat Background
Wakefield was named after Edmund Gibbon Wakefield, whose notions for the ideal structure of society were the basis for the colonisation of South Australia. Prior members include Sir Frederick Holder, a speaker in the House of Representatives during the years of 1901 to 1909, and Charles Hawker, a wounded WWI hero. He was in office from 1929 to 1938 and died in a plane crash not far from Melbourne.
Demographics
Though classified by Australian Electoral Commission as rural, redistribution has seen the seat into the northern suburbs of Adelaide.
