About Solomon
One of the two seats in the Northern Territory, Solomon covers most of the Darwin metropolitan area and is approximately 326 square kilometres in size. It includes the defence establishments of Robertson Barracks,the Larrakeyah navy base, the RAAF facilities at Darwin Airport and the HMAS Coonawarra communications station. The 2001 census shows Solomon as the electorate with the highest number of defence employees.
Seat Background
Solomon was named after Vaiben Louis Solomon, who is commonly referred to as the Northern Territory's founding father of federation. He was Mayor of the Palmerston District Council for 17 years and was active in the 1887- 8 Constitutional Conventions that later led to the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia. In 1901, Solomon was elected as a member of the House of Representatives for the South Australian seat which included the Northern Territory.
Demographics
Classified by the Austtralian Electoral Commission as Inner Metropolitan, though the seat covers much of outer Darwin as well.
