About Ryan

Ryan, a Queensland seat, covers an area of 415 sq km mainly on the south-western side of Brisbane. The greater part of the division is located north of the Brisbane River with a small part extending south of the river where the suburbs on either side are linked by the Jindalee Bridge. Main suburbs include Bellbowrie, Brookfield, the ‘Centenary’ suburbs, Chapel Hill, Corinda, part of Darra, Indooroopilly, Kenmore, part of Oxley, St Lucia, Taringa, The Gap, and part of Toowong.

The seat is mainly residential with some light industry in Sumner. Its geographic features include the 114 hectare University of Queensland and a large portion of Brisbane Forest Park.

Ryan is one of only two electorates (the other being Bonner) whose boundaries have not been altered in the 2006 redistribution of Queensland's electoral divisions.

Seat Background

Ryan is named after Thomas Joseph Ryan, the Premier of Queensland from 1915 to 1919. Ryan moved to federal politics in 1919, was elected to the House of Representatives as member for West Sydney in the same year and then elected Deputy-Leader of the Labor Party. He died of pneumonia two years later aged 46.

Ryan was held by former Fraser and Howard government minister John Moore from 1975 until 2001.
