About Petrie

The Queensland seat of Petrie comprises the northern Brisbane suburbs of Chermside West, Carseldine, parts of Aspley, Bridgeman Downs and Bracken Ridge. It also takes account of the areas of Redcliffe, Scarborough and Clontarf on the Redcliffe Peninsula.

The 2006 redistribution resulted in approx 8,000 electors in a triangluar area bordered by the Bruce Highway (in the west), Deception Bay Road and Saltwater Creek(east) and Anzac Ave (south) moving from Petrie to Longman. Petrie picked up approx 4,000 electors in parts of Everton Park (from Brisbane) and Aspley (from Lilley).

Seat Background

Petrie was formed in 1949 and is named after Andrew Petrie, civil engineer, pioneer and explorer and the first free settler in Brisbane in 1837. It has predominantly been held by Liberal members of Parliament and has changed hands following the 1983 and 1996 changes in Government. The current sitting member is Teresa Gambaro who won the seat from former Keating government Minister Gary Johns in 1996.

Demographics

Petrie has large populations of older electors in the North of the electorate and concentrations of young aspiring families in areas such as Bridgeman Downs and Mango Hill.
