About Moreton
Moreton takes in the southwestern suburbs of Brisbane, and includes the suburbs of Yeronga, Tarragindi, Eight Mile Plains, Sunnybank, Coopers Plains and Graceville. It is principally a residential area with no significant industries. The southern parts of the electorate are home to a significant Chinese population.
Changes to the seat following redistribution include gaining parts of Annerley and Yeronga (from Griffith) and Eight Mile Plains, Kuraby and Drewvale (from Rankin). Parts of Algester, Calamvale and western Drewvale are now part of Oxley.
Seat Background
Moreton is named after the Moreton Bay area, and was originally a rural seat taking up much of the area south and west of Brisbane when it was proclaimed in 1900. It has only once been held by the Labor Party - 1990 to 1996, and was once the seat of Sir James Killen. In 1961 Killen almost lost to Labor, but was saved by preferences from voters whose first preference had gone to the Communist Party.
