About McEwen

McEwen stretches from the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne into the Central Highlands and includes Alexandra,Broadford, Diamond Creek, Eildon, Gisborne, Healesville, Lancefield, Hurstbridge, Kilmore, Macedon,Marysville, Riddells Creek, Romsey, Seymour, Wallan, Warburton, Whittlesea, Woodend, Woori Yallock,
Yarra Glen, Yarra Junction and Yea. It has an area of 10,675 sq kms. Its economy combines rural industry and small business, as well as it being a dormitory area.

Seat Background

It was first proclaimed in 1984 and named after Sir John (Black Jack) McEwen, a former Country Party Leader and Deputy Prime Minister. The seat has been held by both Liberal and Labor with the current member Fran Bailey initially winning in 1990, losing in 1993 and winning again in 1996.

Demographics

Rural, with some metropolitan encroachment.

Fairly safe Liberal.
