About Makin

Makin is based on the north west suburbs of Adelaide. It includes the suburbs of Para Hills, Para Vista, Modbury, Salisbury East, Salisbury Heights, Tea Tree Gully, Wynn Vale, Surrey Downs and Golden Grove.

Seat Background

Makin was created in 1984 and named after Norman Makin a former Federal Member of Parliament, Minister and Speaker of the House. It was formerly held by Hawke Minister Peter Duncan until 1996 when the Liberal’s Trish Draper was elected as part of the Howard landslide. Draper has remained the member since but will not recontest the election.

Demographics

Outer Metropolitan. Considered a Mortgage Belt seat because of the high proportion of families paying off mortgages. Median Income is in the top 1/3 of all electorates.

Commentary and Analysis

Marginal Liberal. Sitting member retiring. Both major parties are fielding high profile candidates.
