About Longman

Longman runs from just north of the Brisbane local government area up to the southern tip of the Sunshine Coast, with its population centre of gravity somewhere between Caboolture and Bribie Island. Traditionally a rural area it is rapidly urbanising and being settled by commuters and retirees.

The 2006 redistribution resulted in a substantial redrawing of Longman's north west and western boundaries - losing parts of Cabbolture Shire and Caloundra City (to Fisher). Longman gained the growing outer urban suburbs of Dakabin, North Lakes and Kallangur in its south (from Dickson and Petrie).

Seat Background

First proclaimed in 1994 this seat has been redistributed more radically than most over the years. It originally took in areas north and west of Brisbane, reaching as far west as the Lockyer Valley. Named after Mrs Irene Longman, the first female member of the Queensland State Parliament, it has only ever been represented by incumbent, Mal Brough.

Demographics

Rural, with some metropolitan encroachment.

Commentary and Analysis

Fairly safe Liberal.
