About Leichhardt
Leichhardt covers an area of 150 236 sq km from the Torres Strait Islands in the north to Edmonton in the south. The major population centre is Cairns. It also includes Coen, Cooktown, Edmonton, Kuranda, Mossman, Port Douglas, Thursday Island and Weipa.
The seat picked up around 1,500 outer Cairns electors from Kennedy following the 2006 redistribution.
Seat Background
Leichhardt is named after Friedrich Leichhardt, a German explorer and scientist who disappeared while attempting to cross the continent in 1848. Current member Warren Entsch has held the seat and consolidated his hold on it since 1996. Prior to that the electorate tended to be fairly safe Labor.
