About Kalgoorlie
It has been suggested Kalgoorlie is the largest electorate in the world. It takes up almost 90% of the state of WA and 30% of Australia. The seat is home to the mining industry, with the gold mines of Kalgoorlie, Iron Ores towns of Tom Price and Newman. It also is home to the natural gas communities of Karratha, Dampier and Port Hedland.
Seat Background
The federal seat Kalgoorlie has been the home of Labor Members of Parliament for most of its history. Its most notable Member was former maverick ALP, Graeme Campbell whose anti-immigration views resulted in him being dis-endorsed by the ALP. Despite the disendorsement Campbell went on to win as independent in 1996 but was defeated by current Liberal Member, Barry Haase in 1998 on the back on Campbell’s preferences.
Demographics
Kalgoorlie contains some of the highest earners in Australia but its median income rates it as the 38th . According to the 2001 Census, 16.1% of the electorate's population is of indigenous origin.
Commentary and Analysis
