About Higgins
Higgins covers some of the most affluent eastern areas of Melbourne, covering an area of 39 sq km from Oakleigh in the south east to South Yarra and Toorak in the north west, Prahran in the south east, Camberwell in the north east, and Ashburton in the east. Main suburbs include Armadale, Ashburton, Chadstone, Glen Iris, Malvern, Malvern East, parts of Burwood, Burwood West, Camberwell, Carnegie, Murrumbeena, Oakleigh, Prahran and South Yarra.
Seat Background
Higgins is named after the Hon. Henry Higgins, a Member of House of Representatives from 1901 to 1906, Justice of the High Court from 1906 to 1929, and President of the new Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Court from 1907 to 1921. He was responsible for the concept of the basic wage, as annunciated in the Harvester Case. It is ironic that the present incumbent, Peter Costello, first made a name for himself as a young barrister challenging some of the cherished principles of industrial law in the Dollar Sweets case.
