About Herbert
Herbert is based around the north Queensland centre of Townsville. At 389 sq kms in size it is the smallest seat north of the Brisbane metropolitan seats - reflecting its focus on the Townsville metropolitan area. The economy is heavily dependent on processing raw materials such as zinc, nickel, copper and sugar. It is also home to James Cook University and large defence facilities - Lavarack army base and the RAAF facility of Garbutt.
A small number of electors living in areas of Townsville sitting south of the Ross River were moved to the seat of Dawson following the recent redistribution.
Seat Background
Herbert was first proclaimed in 1901 and has regularly changed hands between Labor and non-Labor. It was named after Sir Robert Herbert, the first Premier of Queensland.
Demographics
