About Gippsland

Gippsland is a rural electorate running down the east coast of Victoria from the New South Wales border to Port Albert and in to the Great Dividing Range. Industries included dairy, beef, fishing, forestry, tourism, oil and gas. It also contains the RAAF Base at East Sale.

Seat Background

Gippsland was first proclaimed in 1901 and is named after its locality. At a federal level it has never been held by Labor, but the area was decisive in handing the Bracks Government victory against Jeff Kennett. The margin of safety of the National Party member has been reduced significantly as a result of the last redistribution.

Demographics

Rural.

Commentary and Analysis
