About Flynn

Flynn is a new seat in central Queensland created by the 2006 redistribution.

It covers 314,305 sq kms and (heading east from its western borders) includes the population centres of Winton, Longreach, Barcaldine, Emerald, Blackwater, Moura, Biloela, Monto, Eidsvold, Gayndah, Gladstone and Miriam Vale.

Industry in the seat includes the massive Gladstone alumina plant and power station, as well as grazing (beef), agriculture (cotton, grains), horticulture (citrus) and tourism. Coal mining is big in Flynn: mines in operation or under development include Xstrata Rolleston, Felix Resources Minerva and Macarthur Coal – West Rolleston, BHP Billiton Blackwater, Xstrata Cook, Wesfarmers Curragh, Jellinbah East and Felix Resources Yarrabee.

Seat Background

The seat was originally going to be named Wright, after the renowned poet Judith Wright, but the name was changed to remove confusion with a former Member of Parliament who had been imprisoned. John Flynn was known as "Flynn of the Inland" for his work with people in the outback.

Demographics

Rural.

Commentary and Analysis

Rural votes should make the seat safe for the non-Labor parties.
