About Fisher
Fisher is an interesting geographic mix sitting on the southern part of Queensland's Sunshine Coast yet also bordering Brisbane's outer metropolitan electorates. From east to west, Fisher covers the urban coastal and hinterland areas of the Caloundra City Council; the north-west regions of the Caboolture Shire; and the Kilcoy Shire.
Most voters will be enrolled in the areas of Alexandra Headlands, Mooloolaba, Kawana and the rail corridor stretching from Mooloolah south to Elimbah.
Over 30,000 enrolled voters that reside in any areas of the Maroochy Shire that previously were part of Fisher (including Buderim and surrounds) have now been reapportioned to Fairfax following redistribution. Similarly Fisher has picked up electors in Caloundra City Council and Caboolture Shire Council (from Longman).
Seat Background
Created in 1949 and named after Andrew Fisher, Labor Prime Minister 1908-09, 1910-13 and 1914-15. Originally a rural seat, it had been held by the Country/National Party for most of its history through the Adermann family, Charles (1949-72) and son Evan (1972-84). Shifting into the state's urban south-east over the decades, Fisher was won for Labor by Michael Lavarch on the tail of the abortive Joh for Canberra campaign in 1987. When Lavarch shifted to the new seat of Dickson in 1993, the MP he defeated in 1987, Peter Slipper, won the seat, though in the meantime he had switched from the National to the Liberal Party.
