About Dickson
Dickson covers an area of 4,649 sq km to the north and west of the local government area of Brisbane City, including some Brisbane suburbs. The majority of its electors come from Pine Rivers Shire. Main suburbs include Albany Creek, Arana Hills, Bray Park, Brendale, Cashmere, Dayboro, Eatons Hill, Everton Hills, Ferny Hills, Kallangur (part), Joyner, Lawnton, Petrie (part), Samford Valley and Strathpine; significant townships include Esk, Toogoolawah and Collinton.
The recent redistribution resulted in the geographic centre of the seat moving distinctly west: the seat moves from being centred on Lake Samsonvale to Lake Wivenhoe. This change reflects the inclusion of the Esk Shire (from Blair) and the loss of eastern areas of Dakabin, Kallangur, Murrumba Downs and Petrie (to Dickson).
Seat Background
Dickson is named after Sir James Robert Dickson, a leading advocate of Federation in the 19th century. He served as Queensland Premier from 1898 to 1899 and Minister for Defence in the first Federal Ministry. It was first proclaimed in 1992 and was initially held by Michael Lavarch, Keating's Attorney-General. Tony Smith won the seat for the Liberal Party in 1996, but after bizarre revelations about domestic violence and brothels resigned as a Liberal, contesting the seat as an independent in 1998. He was beaten by former Democrats leader, now and ALP candidate, Cheryl Kernot. Kernot in her turn was beaten at the following election by policeman, Peter Dutton.
