About Dawson
Dawson is a coastal Central Queensland seat based on the city of Mackay, and covering an area of 18,052 sq km. Its northern border includes the southern reaches of Townsville City and it stretches south covering the major centres of Ayr, Bowen, Proserpine and finishing with the City of Mackay at the seat's most southerly point. Capricornia also includes The Whitsunday Islands - Hamilton, Hayman, and South Molle.
Capricornia moved slightly to the north following the recent redistribution. Three aspects of this are significant: the seat picked up a little over 5,000 electors to the south of Townville's Ross River (from Herbert); the seat lost over 13,000 electors around Mackay's west and south (to Capricornia); and finally, the seat's expected enrolment is thought to have grown nearly 5% in the last two years.
Seat Background
Dawson is named after Andrew Dawson, Queensland's first Labor Premier in 1899. It was first proclaimed in 1949 and the current member is National De-Anne Kelly who won the seat in 1996.
