About Corangamite
Corangamite covers an area of 7570 sq km from Colac in the west to St. Leonards in the east and from Meredith in the north to Cape Otway in the south. Some surburbs of Geelong and the towns of Anglesea, Apollo Bay, Barwon Heads, Inverleigh, Lorne, Ocean Grove, Portarlington and Torquay are located within this division.
Seat Background
Corangamite is named after Lake Corangamite, which originated from the Aboriginal word for ‘bitter’, thus describing the salt content of the lake. Since 1931 it has been a non-Labor seat, starting with the Country Party in 1931. It was represented between 1910 and 1913 by future Labor Prime Minister, James Scullin.
