Main suburbs include Cardiff, Edgeworth, and Wallsend in the Newcastle area and Boolaroo, Speers Point, Toronto, Wangi Wangi, Warners Bay, Morisset and Wyee in the Lake Macquarie area.

Charlton is named after Matthew Charlton, a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1903 to 1910, Member of House of Representatives from 1910 to 1928, and Leader of the Australian Labor Party from 1922 to 1928.
