About Capricornia
Centred on the central Queensland centre of Rockhampton, Capricornia covers an area of 92,889 sq kms. It goes north to Collinsville, south to Rockhampton and Yeppoon and west to Clermont.
The recent redistribution saw the seat lose the south west shires of Banana (including Biloela, Moura and Mount Morgan) and Duaringa (including Blackwater) to its new southern neighbour Flynn. It picked up a commensurate amount of electors from the areas to the immediate north west and south of Mackay.
Major industries are rural, mining, fishing and tourism.
Seat Background
First proclaimed in 1900, the seat has predominantly been held by the ALP. Present member Kirsten Livermore won the seat from National Paul Marek in 1998.
A notable former member of this seat was long serving Labor member Frank Forde, who became Australia's shortest-serving Prime Minister from 6-12 July 1945. The federal electorate of Forde that sits to the south of Brisbane is named in his honour.
