About Calwell
A seat in the outer north-west industrial area of Melbourne, Calwell covers 504 square kilometres and the localities of Attwood, Broadmeadows, Bulla, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Craigieburn, Dallas, Gladstone Park, Greenvale, Jacana, Kalkallo, Meadow Heights, Melbourne Airport, Mickleham, Oaklands Junction, Roxburgh Park, Somerton, Sunbury, Westmeadows, Wildwood and Yuroke.
It is a major automobile manufacturing area, as well as having food processing, textiles, clothing and transport.
Seat Background
First proclaimed in 1984 it is named after ALP Federal Opposition Leader Arthur Calwell. It is a safe Labor seat. The current incumbent replaced the previous one, Dr Andrew Theophanous who was forced to resign from the ALP because of an immigration scandal.
