About Barker

It covers an area of approximately 52,006 sq km from Swan Reach to Port MacDonnell in the south. The eastern boundary is the Victorian border. The towns of Bordertown, Goolwa, Keith, Kingscote, Kingston SE, Mannum, Millicent, Mt Gambier, Murray Bridge, Naracoorte, Penola, Pinnaroo, Port Elliot, Tailem Bend, Victor Harbor and Yankalilla are in this division.The area produces beef and dairy cattle, sheep, fishing, cereals, forestry, timber, paper products, wine, transport and tourism.

Seat Background

Barker has Existed since Federation, and has always been held by conservatives. It is named after Captain Collett Barker, the first European to discover the mouth of the Murray River. The electorate includes Penola, the long-time residence of prospective saint Mary Mackillop, and Bordertown, the birthplace of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke.
