About Ballarat
A rural Victorian seat centred on Ballarat, Victoria's largest inland city. Its main centres are Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh.

Seat Background
Ballarat was first proclaimed in 1901 and is named after its principal city which was the first inland city established in Victoria. The name apparently derives from the Aboriginal word "balaarat" meaning resting place. Its first member was Alfred Deakin, Australia's second Prime Minister and one of the founders of the original Liberal Party. Incumbent Catherine King has held the seat since 2001.
