About Aston

Aston covers an area of 101 sq km from Heathmont south to Rowville, and from Ferntree Gully in the east to Vermont South in the west. Main suburbs include Bayswater, Bayswater North, Boronia, Ferntree Gully, Forest Hill, Heathmont, Knoxfield, Lysterfield, Mountain Gate, Ringwood, Rowville, Scoresby, Studfield, Vermont, Vermont South, Wantirna and Wantirna South.

Seat Background

Aston is called after Tilly Aston, a blind writer and teacher who helped establish the Library of the Victorian Association of Braille Writers in 1894. In the 1950's it was renamed the "Braille and Talking Book Library".

It is currently held by Chris Pearce who won the seat in a byelection in 2001, partly on the issue of the Scoresby freeway. The freeway issue again dominated the 2004 election, following the Bracks Government's refusal to honour an election promise to keep it free - with Pearce obtaining a primary vote swing of 7.89% (to 58.6%).
