Seat Background
Aston is called after Tilly Aston, a blind writer and teacher who helped establish the Library of the Victorian Association of Braille Writers in 1894. In the 1950's it was renamed the "Braille and Talking Book Library".
It is currently held by Chris Pearce who won the seat in a byelection in 2001, partly on the issue of the Scoresby freeway. The freeway issue again dominated the 2004 election, following the Bracks Government's refusal to honour an election promise to keep it free - with Pearce obtaining a primary vote swing of 7.89% (to 58.6%).
