Andrew Bartlett
Australian Democrats candidate for Queensland
Why I am standing
I am running for re-election to the Senate because I believe that now more than ever, Queensland needs an experienced person representing Queensland in balance of power situations. This election there is a real chance that the major parties could repeat 2004 and win all the Queensland Senate seats, leaving Queensland without any independent representation in the Senate or any voice in the balance of power.
There is also a possibility that my seat could fall to a minor party candidate who does not have the experience or the ability to approach all issues dispassionately and weight them against the evidence. The minority parties vying for my seat include: Pauline Hanson, Family First and the Greens.
I also believe that in my ten years as a Senator for Queensland I have represented the state well and still have much to offer the people of Queensland. I want to continue and build on my strong work and record on many issues, much of which could be lost if I am not re-elected.

Important issues in my electorate
Queensland, being a large and diverse state, has many important issues of concern to the community this election. Issues have more resonance in particular areas at different times however they all impact on the overall health of the state.
During my regular contact with people through Queensland the issues that have been identified as areas of concern are:
Housing affordability
The environment - including climate change, water , protecting and preserving our natural environment and stopping nuclear energy
Indigenous issues, including housing, health and land use.
Protecting our rights and freedoms, including restoring our democracy, implementing a Bill of Rights, review and reform of the anti-terror laws, remove discrimination on the basis of sexuality or gender identity, promoting multi-culturalism.
Ensuring the welfare of the community, including reforming our workplace relations laws, welfare-to-work laws, better support for people with disabilities, mental health services and carers, and implementing tax reform.

Important policy documents
The Qld Democrats have produced a wide range of Action Plans outlining our vision for the future of Queensland and Australia. They can be accessed at http://andrewbartlett.com/display/election%20action%20platforms.html
