Australian Democrats candidate for Adelaide

Why I am standing

The Democrats are the only political party in Australia with integrity, the only party with consistent ideals that pro-actively engage all members of society without prejudice. What’s more, the Democrats are the only party that encourages debate within its ranks and our greater communities to decern the most ethical and realistic solution, rather than dictating to Australian’s what they should need, as the major parties of Australia do.

As a Member of Parliament I will actively seek out the best solutions based on the issue, not ideology. I always endeavour to gain the widest possible community perspective by talking to all members of our community and hearing their side of the story.

Important issues in my electorate

- Helping struggling students and lower income families with the cost of rent and basic medical services.

- Providing better quality educational services by increasing the allocation of funding to higher education providers and secondary schools.

- Creating affordable incentives for homeowners and businesses to introduce renewable lifestyle options including but not limited to: solar power, rain water tanks, and grey water re-use.

- Better and more reliable public transport, including the upgrading of the rail system to electric, as an incentive to reduce the use of environmentally destructive modes of transport.

- Practically addressing the on-going problem of homelessness in Adelaide, and providing the services and support needed to keep people off the streets and prevent homelessness occuring in the first instance.

- Increasing the availability of high speed broadband and reducing Telstra's monopoly on high speed internet to create competition and lower prices for residents.

- Providing the infrastructure and investment into Adelaide's cultural life: through contemporary music, festivals, support for grassroots street press to act as a medium for home-grown artists, an extension of the availability and broadcast strength of community television (such as Channel 31) to professionally showcase local talent.

Important policy documents

My key areas of concern:

1.Ensuring all members of our community have the opportunity to attain a high level of education and be active contributors to Australian society.

2. Increasing the quality and quantity of medical services available in Australia and our region.

3. Fostering an innovative and creative society that is proud of its cultural achievements and supports an extensive research and development program, acknowledging the potential Australia has to be a world-leader in the arts and technology and supporting it accordingly.

4. Tackling Climate Change through practical and sustainable solutions, hand-in-hand with the business and community sectors and acknowledging their importance in our society.

5. Committing Australia to honour its international obligations through the UN, to its regional neighbours, and to its responsibilities to the developing world.
