Australian Democrats candidate for Brisbane

Candidate for Brisbane

Why I am standing

I have been heavily involved in politics – both party and community – since the Tampa crisis in 2001.
As with that campaign, the supposed main opposition party is adopting a small target strategy, offering as little difference from the government as possible.
I’m proud to stand for a party that offers a genuine alternative – real democracy, real policies and real choices.
The Democrats have been fighting for a fairer, greener and more compassionate Australia for thirty years, and I ask for your vote to help us bring real democracy back to Canberra.

Important issues in my electorate

I think the debauched processes for greenlighting the Hale St Bridge and cross city tunnels are particularly damning - bringing generational debt to our city and not solving the problem.
Apart from the unpicking of our democracy, the effects of climate change will reach all of us, and the economic, social and health impacts for the people of Brisbane will be enormous.

Important policy documents

In order to guarantee our democracy, we need a bill of rights drafted in concert with the public.
We need citizens' initiated referenda to force government to face issues they'd rather ignore.
We need an adequately funded public broadcaster that is independent of government and can hold all politicians to account.
We need an independent public service that can give frank and fearless advice and which once more serves the public, not its political masters.
And first and foremost, we have to return the Senate to a true house of review, independent of government.
If we can restore democracy, whoever forms the next government will not be able to ignore the 70% of people who want real action on climate change.
Or the majority who want better services rather than tax cuts.
Or all of us who want our parliamentarians to represent us, to listen to us, and to work in our best interests, not the interests of their party.
