Australian Democrats candidate for Blair
Australian Democrats candidate for Blair
Why I am standing
I joined the Australian Democrats in 1988 and was particularly impressed by the Democrats actively encouraging members to help develop policy, their solid support for 'people power' and political reform, and inspired by Don Chipp. The founder of the Democrats, Don Chipp, had the philosophy to “Keep the Bastards Honest”. I share that philosophy and, if elected, will pursue it strongly with either a Rudd or Howard Government.

Important issues in my electorate
The Goodna Bypass proposal would greatly reduce traffic congestion and air pollution along and near the Ipswich Motorway. However, I would insist upon a Environmental Impact Study being made on BOTH routes, before government decisions are made. Combined fresh air, fresh water, and healthy food, is by far the most important issue. I am pleased that the Democrats scored 83% approval on the initial environmental scorecard compared to 23% for the Coalition and 40% for Labor. As a professional direct care worker in disability care services, I am fully aware of the plight of associated carers; the disabled; inadequate pensions; rental assistance; medical care; and lack of care facilities. Greater availability of affordable housing, whether it is buying or renting, especially for young people, would be another issue. These issues are not the only ones, but if all were achieved then Blair electorate would be an even greater caring, healthier and happier community.

Important policy documents
David believes the most important issue we face is global warming. Since 1988, the Australian Democrats have actively campaigned to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb global warming . Past government inaction means global warming will have an increasing and more profound impact on our economy, society and environment. Petrol, electricity and water costs will go up and these increased costs will require structural adjustment of our economy and how we do things. Australians are now convinced that serious action is needed from government and needed fast. It is acknowledged that our economy needs to be protected from unnecessary shock. Economic growth and productivity can happen alongside greenhouse reduction policies. These actions range from banning the most energy wasting practices and ramping up and enforcing minimum energy standards for houses, appliances and equipment. In many cases only political will, thought and imagination are required. Part of the Democrats vision for a sustainable Australia is a solar hot water heater and solar power station on every roof, houses built to a 10 star energy rating with no heating and cooling required, discounts on a cleaner car or making your home or business more energy efficient. We must ensure that future generations have a healthy environment, a sustainable economy and quality of life in the face of global warming. The Australian Democrats have long argued for a robust, commonsense approach to this challenge so the required structural adjustment of our economy can be undertaken while avoiding unnecessary shock.
