The Australian Greens candidate for Cowper

Candidate

Why I am standing

I am running for the Greens because we have the policies to turn this country around and address climate change, poverty, and the decline in services such as education and health. If elected I will truly represent all the people of Cowper in Canberra.

Important issues in my electorate

The development of a decentralised renewable energy industry will mean jobs and opportunities locally.

I oppose the development of Boambee Beach for the Surf Life Saving Championship. The Championships should be held at either of the already-developed Park Beach (Coffs Harbour) or Woolgoolga Beach.

I oppose Malcolm Turnbull's plan to dam the Clarence River and divert water to SE Queensland.

I support the immediate diversion of Sydney/Queensland B-double trucks off the Pacific Highway and on to the New England Highway (a gazetted National Highway). I support urgent investment in a state-of-the-art freight-rail system between Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to get as much of the freight off the roads as possible.

Important policy documents

There are 5 main policy areas I will be highlighting during the campaign.

I support urgent action on climate change. We need to sign Kyoto, join the world carbon trading scheme and set a minimum renewable target of 30% by 2020. We need to get our carbon emissions 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. That is the only way we can avoid warming of more than 2% and runaway climate change.

I support fair workplaces, expanded minimum conditions not AWA's, universal access to unfair dismissal laws and a recognition of the rights of unions.

I support indigenous justice and self-determination. I have a real commitment to closing the gaps in health and economic opportunity between aboriginal Australians and the wider community.

I oppose uranium mining and exporting. I oppose nuclear power plants or waste dumps in Australia.

To deliver social justice to struggling families, I support a big investment in public health, public education and public affordable housing.
