Georgina Johanson
Australian Democrats candidate for Warringah
Medical Radiation Scientist
Why I am standing
I am standing for the Democrats because I believe they are the only true democratic party in Australia. All policies are sent out to every member and are voted on before they are adopted. The Democrats are beholden to neither the Unions nor Big Business. We are not driven or constrained by ideology. I was very upset with our involvement in Iraq and this spurred me on want to change the Law regarding a Prime Ministers ability to take us into an illegal war without the consent of the Parliament. I see individuals freedoms and freedom of the press being eroded everyday and I am worried for the future of our Great Democracy.- Get Up People -"All it takes for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing!" I believe that Climate Change is real and is happening faster than predicted. For those sceptics Peak Oil is another reason to find sustainable energy sources. I despair at the lack of planning and investment in infrustructure at a time when the government is collecting record taxes.Eventually the rising cost of petrol will bite into every facet of the economy and we are making no provisions for its effects. We will have erratic weather patterns due to climate change as well. I am appalled at the lack of testing of chemicals being introduced into our environment. Sunscreens and cosmetics are full of eostrogen mimickers and nano titanium. We need laws ensuring that adequate testing has been carried out and that products are safe. I think that government needs to recognise that a childs very early experiences have a direct affect on their behaviour and in the long term on their success in life. This makes a big difference to our society as a whole.
These are just some of the reasons I joined the Democrats.

Important issues in my electorate
Would like to see the new level 5 hospital at Frenchs Forest up and running some time soon! Do not support more housing in Bantry Bay. Would like to see nurses payed more, work loads capped, given access to longer hours of child care, better parking arrangements and more positions offered at universities. This way we could stop 'bed block'. There are plenty of beds, just no one to tend to them. I would like to see a National Chief Nursing Officer.

Important policy documents
As the Australian Democrats Warringah candidate I feel that other issues such as Human rights and the Iraq war have not really been a focus of this election but they are still on peoples minds. Pork Barrelling and tax cuts seems to have got the better of everyone. Since the Coalition government gained control of both houses of Parliament they abolished the senate's reference committees and gave themselves the majority on any remaining committees and the Chairs of all of them. During this time we have seen a slow erosion of our rights, and freedom of the press. It is time that Australia adopted a Bill Of Rights to ensure that our basic freedoms can never be taken away. Australia is the only common law country without a bill of rights. How did we ever get into a war in Iraq? The Democrats are adamant that Parliamentary consent is needed before Australian troops are sent to any overseas conflict, except in the case of emergency where gaining such consent would be impractical. The Democrats aim to take the decision to commit troops to overseas conflict out of the hands of the Prime Minister and a subservient and secretive Cabinet, and place it with Parliament.Having a legislative mechanism available to review an Executive decision to send our troops abroad would mean greater scrutiny of the circumstances under which the decision was made.
