Priya Carey
The Australian Greens candidate for Batman
Why I am standing
I am standing for the Australian Greens in this election because I care about the world we will leave for future generations. I took on an active role after reading the Stern Review, which makes it clear that it is our economic, environmental and social responsibility to take urgent action. We have only a narrow window in which to act, and the costs of not acting will be much higher. Another motivating factor for me is the desire to restore, protect, and promote democracy in Australia. It is easy to take our rights and freedoms for granted but we have been losing too many of them under the current government.
A vote for me is a vote to take urgent action on climate change, abolish WorkChoices, restore social justice and human rights, and increase funding for health and education.

Important issues in my electorate
People in Batman are concerned about WorkChoices taking away their rights to fair treatment. Many are also concerned about punitive 'Welfare to Work' measures. Climate change and our water supplies are high on the agenda of people I've talked to when doorknocking. Batman voters also want to see human rights and multiculturalism protected - a human rights forum in the electorate was very well attended. In summary, Batman is becoming a very Green electorate.

Important policy documents
A clear distinction between the Greens and the old parties is that we believe in principled, responsible politics. Instead of throwing money at the electorate by way of tax cuts, we would show real leadership by properly funding initiatives to help solve the issues presented by climate change (by promoting energy efficiency, as just one example). We would also fund quality health care and education, so that access to high quality care is not dependant on having a high income.
Greens policies are based on four principles:
Ecological sustainability Social and economic justice Peace and non-violence Grassroots democracy
We have a full range of policies, details of which can be found at:
