The Australian Greens candidate for Wills

Teacher

Why I am standing

I'm a high school teacher with a passion for community education. I currently teach students from a range of countries including refugees from Eritrea. I have also worked in the area of aid and development on the Jubilee 2000 campaign to address global poverty and locally i've worked in a range of voluntary capacities with the homeless in Melbourne’s inner-city.

From these experiences i was drawn to the Greens straightforward emphasis on peace, social justice, grassroots democracy and environmental sustainability. John Howard has been running the country down for years, and Kevin Rudd is imitating many of his policies. Only the Greens offer a real alternative.

Important issues in my electorate

Housing affordability has hit Wills particularly hard, with many people being priced out of the buyers and rental markets. This endangers the social diversity of our suburbs over time. The ALP's plan to lift rents for those in public housing by up to $20 per week next year will make life very difficult for many low income tenants.

The Greens policy to invest in affordable housing will make a particular difference. Not only are we calling for greater government investment, but also for all new housing developments to include, by law, 20% affordable housing. This will ease the pressure on a lot of struggling people in our area.

Important policy documents

Education - Invest in schools, especially public schools; higher wages and better job security for teachers.
Health - Redirect the private health insurance rebate towards quality universal healthcare.
Climate Change - Take real action to limit global warming to 2 degrees C. Invest heavily and immediately in renewables.
Workplace Rights - Completely tear up WorkChoices.
