Graham Smith
The Australian Greens candidate for Makin
Candidate
Why I am standing
I am standing as a Green because like so many Australians, I have become disillusioned with the major parties lack of real action on climate change. The difference between them is now almost indistinguishable, and people are crying out for an alternative. The Greens are now the third party and are in effect, the opposition. The Greens are the most trusted party to fight global warming, and we are now the only party totally opposed to the deadly nuclear industry. Take out some third party insurance - Vote Green.

Important issues in my electorate
Many families in Makin are dependent on both parents working to pay the bills. This makes it difficult for women to take time out to have children. The Greens will introduce a government funded parental leave scheme for 18 week paid leave, and a further 34 weeks unpaid leave, and the right to return to work on a part time basis. We will also introduce more government funded child care facilities in areas of high demand.

Important policy documents
The Greens will: Introduce binding targets to reduce emissions by 30% below 1990 levels by 2020, and 80% by 2050. Set a minimum renewable energy target of 15% by 2012, and 25% by 2020. We will sign the Kyoto protocol. We will redirect the $3 billion private health insurance rebate to public health and hospitals. We will hold a proper referendum on whether Australians want our nation to become a republic. We will increase funding for all levels of public education, including TAFE and university. We will introduce a national dental scheme for low income earners and concession card holders. We will immediately give pensioners a $30.00 increase per week. We will repeal the federal Work choices legislation in it's entirety.
