The Australian Greens candidate for Stirling

Greens (WA) Candidate for the Seat of Stirling

Why I am standing

I’m standing as the Greens (W.A.) candidate for the seat of Stirling because I want a secure economy and a healthy environment, and neither Labor nor Liberal are tackling it seriously enough.

The Greens consider the environment at the top of every equation, in terms of our dependence on it, and what we leave for our children. The economy is not separate from the environment. The two are interdependent – the environment supports us, rather than simplistic notions of Jobs VS the environment, because, there will be no jobs on a dead planet!

The Greens recognise we need to deal with Climate change solutions now – not 10 years down the track. We see exciting opportunities for sustainable economic change and development - and we must be acting NOW - to protect the environment for future generations.

The Greens have important social policies that look after the vulnerable and are for the betterment of humankind – rather than separating one segment of society against another. Tougher laws and new categories of crimes have not solved our law and order issues. Poor education and poor health services do not lead to tolerant civil societies.

I'm deeply concerned with how our refugee policy is going backwards. It ignores the contributions made by migrants and refugees to Australia. Boat people are human beings, not criminals. Putting them in prisons on offshore islands is an abhorrent kind of racism.

This year’s election is crucial. It is important that voters recognise TWO elections are underway: one to see who will form government, and the other to see who will control the Senate - the house of review.

At present the Howard Government holds 39 of the 76 Senate seats, giving them the absolute majority they need to drive through IR and Northern Territory takeover laws with no debate and no amendments. People are beginning to understand how disastrous it has been having the Howard GOVT controlling both houses of parliament and turning the Senate from a house of review into a rubber stamp or a sausage factory.

VOTE GREENS 1 in the Lower House and DOUBLE YOUR VOTE. Send a powerful message to the major parties to change and rethink their policies. That’s what the Greens are doing with our ‘Double Your Vote” campaign. When you vote greens, you have a double vote because If we are not elected, your vote of full value will go the next party of choice.

VOTE GREENS 1 IN THE UPPER HOUSE. The Greens can be the Independent watchdog in the senate, and restore the Senate as a House of Review. Without a progressive Senate, we cannot repeal Work Choices, we wont be able to take decisive action on climate change, and making smarter decisions for our future. For third party insurance – VOTE GREENS 1 – AND we'll hold whoever wins government to account!

Important issues in my electorate

• Water: In Stirling, like the rest of Australia, we are faced with an urgent water crisis. Key challenges for our community are how to decrease water consumption, and how to encourage people to plant native gardens, monitor bore usage, use water-wise appliances and make every drop count.

• Transport: Decrease car use and carbon emissions by increasing use of public transport (more funding, connecting services, LIGHT RAIL). Neither Labor nor Liberal have tackled the issue of oil in this election campaign, and in terms of our reliance on it and its harm to the atmosphere. The GREENS have released an exciting Policy Initiative for Light Rail for Perth - which would address social inequities, and areas of high vulnerability caused by the cost of oil. The Greens have the vision and we are ready to address the issues NOW, when it is most critical and not too late!

• Coastal Health threatened by erosion and rising sea levels. We must seriously address our carbon emissions (personally, locally, nationally and globally) before rising sea level rise wreaks havoc on our coastal cities and suburbs.

• ENERGY EFFICIENCY & HOUSING: We can make great cost savings in energy efficiency – from water use to energy needs. We support sustainable housing – new building designs must be sustainable, while older and existing housing in Stirling (the majority of housing in Stirling) need to be retrofitted ASAP to be more sustainable.

The Greens have released a new policy initiative called EASI – which would allow for residents to fit-out their homes with upfront costs paid for by the Government and paid back in a 10 year period (CPI indexed) - with the savings in energy costs. This would allow for Stirling to really benefit from energy savings and contribute to Energy Efficiency and Decreased Carbon Emissions, at this most critical time which is now.

• WORKCHOICES & WELFARE TO WORK: The Greens will support Repealing work choices and the Welfare to Work scheme. People who have been unfairly targeted here are women, people with disabilities, Aboriginal people and youth. We support more education and support for people to return to work - rather than breaches.

• HOUSING: More funding for infrastructure projects – Sustainable Housing, Public Education & Health-care to support increasing population in the City of Stirling. I SUPPORT MORE PUBLIC AND COMMUNITY HOUSING. INCREASE FUNDING FOR HEALTH AND EDUCATION – REPEAL HECS.

• Refugees AND migrants make up a big number of Stirling residents. THE Greens support processing in community. People have the right to seek asylum and flee danger, and the Greens support refugees being processed accordingly in the community. More funding for settlement programs for Refugees and Migrants in Stirling. Increase Mental health services for migrants but also for the community. The refugee issue is also a climate change issue. By 2050, climate change will push the number of displaced people globally to at least one billion.

Important policy documents

• Keep Australia nuclear free. A ban on uranium mining & Exports. No Nuclear Power, No Waste Dumps, No to the nuclear cycle. Nuclear power poses too many risks in terms of waste, and threats to peace and security, let alone its energy consumption.

• Switching to renewable energy. No new coal powered stations. The Greens (WA) see lots of options for a green economy. The party’s policies urge governments and corporates to seriously fund alternative renewable technologies. Solar (including household that sell to local power grids), wind, gas, hydrogen, wave power can all supply base-load energy. Unless we decrease our carbon emissions, climate change will take away our options. The environment supports our economy.

• Reduce Greenhouse emissions by 30% by 2020.

• Negotiating a post-Kyoto Protocol and set carbon trading levels. A carbon emissions target of 25% below 1990 levels, by 2020, with 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. The strong support for establishing and empowering global and multilateral forums to address this issue.

• Removing subsidies on unsustainable industries eg: subsidised water to primary and secondary industry, and subsidised mining exploration.

• Investing in renewable energy such as solar (including households that sell to local power grids), wind, gas, geothermal, hydrogen and wave power for base-load energy. We can export renewable technologies, not coal and uranium!

• Protecting our old-growth and high conservation value forests. NO LOGGING OF TASMANIAN OLD-GROWTH FORESTS!

• An end to the war in Iraq.

• Protect workers rights. Abolish AWA's & Restore Unfair Dismissal Laws. We have the best IR policy to protect the more vulnerable workers in this nation, as we seek to protect the weak and vulnerable from neglect and exploitation.

• A sustainable economy and a healthy environment.

• Prioritise public education and abolish HECS. Quality public schools.

• Redirect $3 billion from private health insurance rebates to public health services. Health services, including mental health services for all who need them. Restore the Commonwealth dental scheme - Provide public dental care for low-income earners.

• Close the 17 year gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians

• Communities without racism and discrimination.

• A fair and equitable society for everyone.

• No to TAX CUTS for wealthy - increase the aged pension by $60 a fortnight.

• We care for refugees. NO DETENTION CENTRES. Refugees to be processed in the community.

• Acess to high quality, affordable childcare. Replace the Child care tax Rebate with a Child Care Benefit Guarantee (accessed sooner than the present 6months). Prioritise funding for Community ‘Not for profit’ Childcare Centres.

• For 3rd party insurance - we'll hold whoever wins government to account. VOTE GREENS 1 FOR ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE SENATE.

• Vote 1 the Greens and if they are not elected, your vote goes to your second choice at full value.
