Tim Williams

Independent candidate for Macquarie

Independent Candidate

Why I am standing

I am standing as an independent for the seat of Macquarie because I believe the people of Macquarie (and Australia more broadly) deserve real representation in our parliament. I know many people who are frustrated by the major parties and the independent way is the only true alternative.
I stand as a true independent! I have never had any affiliations with a party and I will remain fiercely independent at all times.
I will vote with conscience and remain at arms length from the party system.
I will hold the major parties to account and ensure issues they do not want to address still come before parliament. The records of independents such as Ted Mack, Peter Andren and Tony Windsor speak volumes for what independents can achieve.
Independents are vitally important in our parliament. They have been the only constant voice against the sale of public assets and have even played a large part in preventing the sale of assets such as Snowy Hydro.
In recent years the major parties have sold public assets such as Telstra, Qantas, The Commonwealth Bank, public transport infrastructure in some sates, roads infrastructure, and large corridors of public land including areas of national significance.
Politicians on both sides are now pushing to sell off the NSW Electricity Grid, Medibank, NSW Public Transport, Australia Post, evermore public land and again Snowy Hydro.
I oppose the further sale of our public assets and will work to have plebiscites introduced before all future sell offs of public companies and infrastructure, giving the people of Australia a say before any sale can take place.
I will oppose wasteful government spending and blatant pork barrelling. In the lead up to recent elections the parties in government have spent literally billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money on what they like to call “public education campaigns”, which, ofcourse is code for advertising specifically designed to win votes.
The most memorable misuse of public funds in this way include campaigns to win public support for the introduction of the GST, changes to Medicare (just before the last federal election) and most recently, WorkChoices. I call for an independent body to organise all public advertising at an arms length from politicians and their sin doctors.
My greatest concern is that the major parties have lost the important focus on providing infrastructure and services to Australians, particularly those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
Improvements to our health system is desperately needed now if we are to support the needs of our rapidly aging population. Our public system is falling apart due to expensive large subsidies to the private sector. The same can be said for public education which is not receiving the funding it deserves. I will be a voice for fair and equitable funding of public health and education.
I will also be a voice for sustainable development and environmental outcomes. I support a move to clean green, renewable energy. Clean coal (geo sequestration) is not viable and it is actually dangerous. Carbon capture technology is unproven and will not be available for 15 years in any case.
Renewable technology does work and can be installed today. Tens of thousands of homes throughout Australia are already powered by 100% solar and wind energy. It is just a matter of building a mass market for the technology to bring the price down so it can compete with the traditional mass market energy produced by coal fired power stations. My parents’ house is powered by a small scale solar system, so I know the technology works.
I believe much government decision making is too short term. Governments in recent years have not focused on achieving the greatest benefit for people in need, but instead have offered support to those in key voting demographics simply to win votes on election day.
I will represent the needs of the people, not a party line
I will work with all sides of politics to get the best outcome for Australia
I will put people before politics and economics
I will promote fair funding for health, education and aged care
I will support fair trade and strong quarantine to protect our farmers
I will stand solid against the further sale of public assets
I will stand for fairer spending of public funds, not pork barrelling
I will hold politicians of all persuasions to account
I will be your independent voice in our parliament.
If you want to be represented by someone who makes decisions based on the greater good, please give me your first preference on election day.
Don’t forget to number all the remaining boxes in order of your choice or your vote will not count.
