Seat Background
Burke, now with redrawn boundaries and known as Gorton is a safe Labour seat. It is named after former Liberal Prime Minister John Gorton, who served in the Senate 1949-68 before transferring to the House of Representatives as MP for Higgins. He replaced the missing and presumed deceased Harold Holt both as MP for Higgins and as Prime Minister.
