About Forde
Forde covers an area of 4873 sq km from Logan in the north-east to the Boonah Shire in the south-west and to the New South Wales Border in the south. The main urban centre is Beenleigh, which is a Labor stronghold, but it includes a large amount of rural territory as it travels further south, taking in Gold Coast hinterland and the Bueadesert area.
Seat Background
Forde is named after Francis Michael Forde, a Member of Legislative Assembly from 1917 to 1922, Member of House of Representatives from 1922 to 1946, and Prime Minister of Australia in July, 1945. It is held for the Liberals by Kay Elson.
The seat was first proclaimed in 1984 and was first won by David Watson who subsequently became a state member and leader of the Queensland Parliamentary Liberal Party. The seat was radically redistributed before the 1996 election, changing its character completely.
