About Canning
Canning is a Western Australian seat and covers an area of 4,174 sq km. It includes the main south-eastern suburbs of Perth including Armadale, Kelmscot, and Westfield and the south-western suburbs of Serpentine-Jarrahdale shire, Pinjarra, and Dwellingup.
Seat Background
Canning was founded in 1949 and named after a young pioneer of stock routes and rabbit proof fencing in the Western part of Australia: Alfred Canning. Canning was originally a rural seat but was swallowed by the city as Perth developed. Since 1996 it has see-sawed between Labor and Liberal. It was won from George Gear in 1996 by Ricky Johnston, who then lost it in 1998 to Jane Gerick. Gerick then lost to incumbent Don Randall after a redistribution.
