About Bass

This Tasmanian seat is centred on the city of Launceston at the north of the island and includes the towns of Bell Bay, Bridport, George Town, Lilydale, Legana, Ringarooma and Scottsdale.

Industries include smelting, rural, mining, timber and shipping. Boag's beer is also brewed in this electorate.

Seat Background

The seat was first proclaimed in 1903. Both sides of politics have held it. In 1975 a by-election caused by the appointment of former Deputy Prime Minister Lance Barnard saw a swing of 13.8% against the Labor Government of Gough Whitlam. This was a bellwhether of Malcolm Fraser's landslide result later that year. Kevin Newman who won that by-election is the father of current Brisbane Lord Mayor, Campbell Newman.
