Nahum Ayliffe
Australian Democrats candidate for Aston
Why I am standing
I am running because the Australian Democrats have been the only party independent of the ALP and the Coalition who have the record on 'keeping the bastards honest' in the Senate. The Democrats Senators work hard, passing amendments to laws to improve legislation where possible and rejecting it when it is a bad law and I hope to see another Democrat Senator added to our team in Victoria. I believe that the Austrlian Democrats 27 year record speaks for itself and we hope to restore some integrity to a parliament tainted by dishonest MP's and PM's.

Important issues in my electorate
Public Transport Truth in Government Affordable health for all based on need, rather than ability to pay Affordable tertiary education should be the right of every Australian regardless of the ability to pay.

Important policy documents
I care about making education more affordable, abolishing HECS in the longer term, and in the shorter term looking to repeal the unjust 25percent hike, which creates a two tiered system: one for the rich and one for everyone else. I'm also passionate about bringing public transport into Aston. Public Transport should be considered on even footing with Road projects. I'm also passionate to see our foreign aid expenditure increased to the UN Standard for the 2015 Development Goals, which is 0.7percent. It would be fantastic to see us achieve the goal of halving global poverty by 2015. Mandatory detention is a blight on the moral fabric of Australia, and it must come to an end. We must speed up the processing of refugees, and release all children from Dentention centres. Andrew Bartlett is the only politician to have visited the 92 assylum seekers staying in Nauru, including meeting the 17 children imprisoned there. All other politicians refused, including Bob Brown. The war on Iraq was completely unjust but we now have a responsibility as an occupying force to restore some semblence of social order to the country prior to withdrawal of our resources. Australians must also urgently commit resources to health and welfare of Aboriginal Communities whose life expectancy is dramatically shorter than the national average. Both Howard and Latham are promising billions of money to every politically expedient cause, yet Aboriginees are once again forgotten by both of the major parties.
