Ian Hehir
The Australian Greens candidate for Warringah
Why I am standing
I have been a resident of Warringah for 20 years, a member of community and sporting groups and am actively involved in issues at all levels of government. I am standing for the Greens in Warringah because I believe it is possible to create an Australia where every child has access to a world class education regardless of their financial situation, where a fully funded universal health care system is in place, and where governments look to innovative transport and energy solutions.

Important issues in my electorate
The Greens believe innovative public transport options should be explored as a priority to address the traffic problems of the Warringah electorate. Utilization of the ferries and Jet Cat services from Manly and Mosman, the opening up of the Dee Why to Chatswood corridor as a major public transport route and 24 hour designated bus lanes would all encourage greater use of public transport. The building of tunnels and freeways only encourages the use of more cars. We need a two hospital solution on the Northern Beaches. If Manly hospital is deemed unsuitable then another site should be found with the existing site to be kept in public ownership and preferably used as a health care facility. Community consultation needs to be a priority in the process.

Important policy documents
The Greens want to see Australian regain its position as a world leader for promoting justice and tolerance, and to fulfil our international and environmental obligations. This means adopting a compassionate approach to asylum seekers, the immediate withdrawal of Australian troops from Iraq, and redirecting our resources towards reconstruction through the United Nations. We must ratify the Kyoto Protocol and return investment back to renewable energies. Australia must take stock of its dwindling natural resources – forests, water and native species - and the Greens would put in place policies that are both protective and sustainable. Australia is at the crossroads and a vote for the Greens will help us move towards a more tolerant and environmentally responsible nation.
