John Kaye
The Australian Greens candidate for New South Wales
Lead Senate Candidate
Why I am standing
John Kaye is a passionate defender of public education, a campaigner for environmental protection and a staunch opponent of privatisation. John worked for twenty years as a university researcher and lecturer in electrical engineering and is an expert on renewable energy. He is a proud member of his union.
John has been a leading voice in the campaign to expose the Howard government’s bias towards private schools and its attacks on the future of public universities and TAFE.
“Since 1996, the Coalition government has poured funds into private schools, many of them already wealthy. Meanwhile Commonwealth funding of public schools is barely keeping pace with inflation. The Greens are committed to reversing this bias and securing an optimistic future for our public schools, TAFE colleges and universities.”
Since the mid 1980s, John has worked to find solutions to the threat of global warming.
“Our society is now facing its greatest ever challenge. Without a concerted effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the future will be marked by wars, starvation and disease. We have an opportunity to turn this around, but we must act now.”
John is also concerned about the destruction of Tasmania’s old growth forests and the loss of jobs in the forestry industry.
“It is time we moved beyond the false choice between environment and employment. With appropriate public investment and intelligent regulation, we can have both. It just takes a little vision to develop sustainable, high value added export industries in wood products, renewable energy and public transport infrastructure.”
John Kaye is an opponent of neo-liberal, privatisation-based economics which he believes is not only making Australia less fair but also reducing our ability to generate wealth.
“This election will determine the future of Australia. More Greens in the Senate will give us our best chance to turn around the Howard government’s agenda and restore optimism to Australia’s future.”
